NDIS STA crack down: $132M in claims stopped

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has confirmed it has stopped over $132 million in participant funding from being misused—thanks to a targeted crackdown on Short Term Accommodation – NDIS STA claims.

This announcement follows a 10-month investigation by the agency, revealing that some providers were exploiting STA as a way to deliver holiday-style services, often misaligned with participant plans or eligibility. Advertisements promising “free holidays” and luxury retreats under NDIS STA funding were common, with providers walking a thin line between support and misuse.

In response, the NDIA conducted manual reviews, issued cease-and-desist orders, referred providers to the ACCC for misleading advertising, and froze suspicious claims. The outcome? A 47% drop in NDIS STA claims and a significant shift in how these supports are scrutinised. 3000+ NDIS providers have exited the scheme.

But this isn’t just about STA.

This action signals a broader shift: increased oversight, tighter controls, and a clear expectation that every claim must be reasonable, necessary, and properly documented.
